A MOTOWN GEM! THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN ORIGINAL APRIL 1966 TEST PRESS OF CHRIS CLARK'S VERSION OF "DO I LOVE YOU".
NEVER RELEASED, IT WAS SCHEDULED FOR VIP 25034, and FRANK WILSON'S VERSION ON SOUL (SIX MONTHS EARLIER) WAS ESSENTIALLY A DEMONSTRATION FOR THIS TAKE BY MISS CLARK - ALMOST IDENTICAL IN FACT (SHE DID HER JOB SO WELL!), AND USING THE SAME BACKING TRACK
There have been a few bootlegs issued, believed to have been pressed using the same masters. However, there is excellent provenance for the authenticity of this disc. Since surfacing from the American Record Pressing (ARP) plant it has been owned by only three collectors: 1) Ron Murphy - recording engineer at Motown 2) Tim Brown - of Anglo-American rare soul vinyl dealership and pre-eminent record collecting fame and 3) the current owner who bought it from Tim in 2011.
Hence, this is a very rare opportunity to own one of the very few genuine originals of 'Do I Love You'.
Included with this record, for the purchaser, comes:
i) Hand written verification from Tim Brown that he bought this copy directly from Ron Murphy in 1989. Part of the story, and photographs of this disc and Ron, are also illustrated in Tim's excellent 2010 book 'The Wigan Casino Years'. ii) A complete transcript of an April 2004 internet conversation (on soulfuldetroit.com) where (the sadly now deceased) Ron Murphy verifies that this Chris Clark test press was discovered in the same ARP batch as his copy of Frank Wilson (together with about 100 other, different, test presses), which he bought from the supervisor of ARP. [Interestingly, Motown and rare soul vinyl historians Dave Flynn and Robb K were also involved in the discussion.]
iii) A copy of Martin Luther King's rare Gordy EP (DJ only, and also essentially a test press), with extracts from four of his speeches - an interesting piece of black American social history in itself - which demonstrates similar quality 1960s vinyl and matrix markings.
If that wasn't enough for this mighty Motown and northern soul treasure, as an added bonus it is also signed by Chris Clark herself on the label and original sleeve.
